sharm el sheikh beaches reopend

Egypt authorities re-opened the beaches at Sharm El Sheikh that has been beleaguered by a series of shark attacks over the last two weeks.

The beaches were closed after a flurry of attacks over the past week that resulted in the death of an elderly German woman. Similar accidents took place last week that involved three Russian tourists in different incidents.

“We have allowed the beaches to reopen on condition hotel owners adhere to new controls to ensure the safety of foreign tourists while diving or swimming,” South Sinai Governor Mohamed Abdel Fadil Shousha told reporters.

Continuous sea patrols as well as setting up of watchtowers along the beach shoreline are few measures that the authorities hope to implement as soon as possible. Swimmers are also required to remain within designated areas and refrain from feeding sharks.

Swimming, snorkelling and diving enthusiasts who were lucky enough to get cheap tickets on flights to the region were not so lucky after all as they faced disappointment after loosing out on the opportunity to enjoy at one of the most famous diving spots in the world.

The lifting up of the ban is indeed great news to such tourists along with local shop keepers who have witnessed a lull in the business since the attacks took place.

Egypt Fears Tourism Downturn
Sharm El Sheikh is a popular beach resort that entices a number of adventure tourists from all across the world to book cheap flights and travel to the region. The destination is particularly popular among Britons as a winter sun holiday spot. In fact, cheap airline tickets to the region are hunted by several budget travellers who seek affordable flights. Being such a popular tourist destination, several airlines offer daily flights to sham el sheikh from UK.

However with such ghastly and terrible shark attacks, Egypt fears that it might loose its crown of being one of the world’s best winter sun destinations. The figure of tourists landing up at the Sharm El Sheikh International Airport has gone down a bit as tourists from different parts of the world are taking a stock of the situation before buying tickets for flights to the region.

Illegal Shark Feeding behind Attacks
Experts believe that illegal feeding might have prompted killer shark attacks. They reckon that shark attacks are most possibly a result of humans upsetting the environmental balance in the region.

“It is safe to say that the situation where you have a clump distribution in attacks, occurring after another in a limited geographical distribution, is very rare indeed,” George Burgess, who is the head of the International Shark Attack File, told AFP, adding that the unusual behaviour of the sharks was possibly the result of human action.

Director of South Sinai Conservation, Mohammed Salem also told AFP that illegal shark feeding is the most possible cause for attacks.

sharm el sheikh - egypt

Located at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula and commanding the passage to the Gulf of Aqaba, Sharm el Sheikh is sand-blown, sunbaked and heavy with symbolism and strategic significance. It played a major part in the events leading to the Six-Day War. At that time, Gamal Abdel Nasser threatened that Egyptian artillery at Sharm el Sheikh would sink any ship that ventured into the narrow Straits of Tiran en route to the Israeli port of Eilat, 130 miles to the north, which handles all of Israel's oil imports. Soon afterward, Israeli paratroopers and amphibious forces captured the fortifications. In the 1956 Sinai campaign, the Israelis took and then returned Sharm el Sheikh; this time they intend to keep it, even though it is their most remote occupied territory. Last week, in the first official step toward altering the area's status, an Interior Ministry representative was dispatched from Jerusalem to change the identification cards of residents and list Sharm el Sheikh as their official Israeli home. TIME Correspondent Marlin Levin was there and sent this report:

MY first trip to Sharm el Sheikh was in 1956 in a military DC-3. We came in for a hard landing on a makeshift airstrip. There were no roads and no inhabitants. The only man-made attractions were two British-built naval guns that had been spiked by retreating Egyptians. This time, my Arkia Viscount made the flight from Tel Aviv in 70 minutes and glided to a powder-puff landing on a hard-topped runway long enough to accommodate a Boeing 707.

A tourist bus took passengers on a ten-minute ride over a newly paved macadam road to the Caravan Hotel, Sharm el Sheikh's year-old 350-bed caravansary. Before we started, the bus driver turned to a young man. "Nu, buddy," he said, "where are you going without a ticket?" The man paid the 40-cent fare and said, "Take me downtown." At that the driver smiled. "Downtown? This isn't Tel Aviv—yet." Certainly not, judging from a first look at the treeless landscape, flat stretches of fine reddish gravel, and cone-shaped peaks of the bleak Sinai range. But the driver's yet was indicative. Small red surveyor's pennants are everywhere along the road. -

The present civilian population is about 500, nearly all male. Of these, 100 are construction workers who have been building military installations and a new road to Eilat. "We're here if they want us to build houses too," says Supervisor Avraham Calev. Some of his workers have already joined the waiting list for government-supplied housing. One, Avraham Freedman, mused about the future. "Look at the lights shining on the Caravan Hotel," he said. "It's almost like Chicago." I saw only one string of lights, but Freedman was sincere. "Trust the Israelis; one day it will be like Hollywood here."

Rumors in Sharm el Sheikh are that construction of private housing will begin in three or four months. Among the 180 families who have signed up so far are Herzl and Judith Frizner, who emigrated to Palestine from Germany 33 years ago and now run the lone gas station in Sharm el Sheikh. "What's so bad here?" asks Mrs. Frizner. "It's quiet, and we have contentment like you can get nowhere else. I'd just like to see a few shops."

Sharm El Sheikh lies on the southern tip of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula to east of the Red Sea. sharm el sheikh holidays are very popular with divers in this area where the waters are packed with exotic marine life and a number of wrecked ships on the sea bed.

Sharm El Sheikh holidays will also inevitably appeal to sun-seekers, located as it is in a part of the world where the sun always shines during the day. Cheap flights from the UK can whisk you to Sharm El Sheikh in a flight of around six hours, and you’ll feel like you’re in a different world.

If diving is not for you, then you can still take to the waters – but stay on the surface. Sailing and windsurfing are for the adventurous, pedaloes are for the fun-seekers, and glass-bottomed boats are a must for everyone who’s not actually going under the water, so that you, too, can experience the wonders below.

Holidays in Sharm El Sheikh can give you a taste of Egyptian culture, despite being hundreds of miles from the Pyramids, Cairo and the ancient tombs. At Sharm El Sheikh you can take a camel trek to a Bedouin village or visit Mount Sinai, where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments. Here a pre-dawn trek up the mountain can give you a stunning view of a middle-eastern sunrise.

The real attractions of Sharm El Sheikh holidays are undeniably the sun and the diving. However, don’t forget your chance to cool down in the Red Sea and you might even manage a round of golf. In addition there are good shopping facilities, traditional markets, and a number of casinos and dance-spots to keep the evenings and nights very lively. When shopping, you’ll be tempted by Egyptian cotton and perfume, and gold and silver jewellery, but don’t forget to haggle!

trip to sharm el sheikh

Sharm el-Sheikh is a sparkling resort on the coast of the Sinai Pennisula. Just a one hour flight from Cairo takes you to the best diving sites in the world. Besides diving, there is something for everyone in this
small, but action-packed community.

Most flights come from Cairo, but you may also access Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport from London's Heathrow Airport, Paris' Charles De Gaulle Airport and Germany's Frankfurt International. A flight from New York's JFK Airport is 10.5 hours to Cairo, a 3 hour minimum layover and 50 minutes to Sharm el-Sheikh, totaling about 15 hours. For those who don't wish to sit for a 10.5 hour flight, you can break up the flying time with an alternative route of 6.5 hours for a trans-atlantic flight from JFK to Heathrow, with a minimum 4 hour layover and 5.5 hours to Sharm, for a total travel time of about 16 hours, with Germany and France about the same. The European layovers allow time to stretch your legs and breath some fresh air. But, anyway you make it, Sharm el-Sheikh is a long haul from the United States, but certainly worth the effort. Beach lovers may prefer to make Sharm their base camp on an Egyptian vacation, as the sights in Cairo and Luxor can be seen on one day excursions via Egypt Air.

1.Ras Mohamad National Park. This preserve has some of the best diving in the world with it's spectacular coral reefs and sea life. Full and half day excursions, starting at about $75, takes you touring the rugged rock formations, walking tours, diving, snorkeling and biking. This is a nature lovers paradise, and a place you will want to have ample time to explore.

sharm el sheikh holidays

Many Egypt holidays understandably focus on the historical attractions within this ancient land, like the iconic pyramids and the Sphinx. However, modern Egypt also has much to offer, particularly for the more adventurous sort of holiday maker. The city of Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula is home to some great examples of the modern attractions that you can enjoy on Egypt holidays.

The access that Sharm El Sheikh affords to the warm waters of the Red Sea has created an international reputation for the city as a centre of world class scuba diving. Pristine coral reefs and an abundance of fish, turtles and endangered mammals are on display in the reliably clear waters of the Red Sea. For the accomplished scuba diver, notable spots like Yolanda Reef and Shark Reef provide excellent drift diving opportunities, as well as many fine wrecks to explore. The established scuba diving scene in Sharm El Sheikh means that the uninitiated can learn the basics of scuba diving while on holiday, although for best value for money you may wish to seek basic tuition at home to ensure that you can make the most of your time when you arrive at the shores of the Red Sea.

The rapid development of Sharm El Sheikh in the last few decades was one of the factors that lead to the creation of Ras Muhammad National park in 1983. This Park protects both land and sea around the Sinai Peninsula, from the outward growth of Sharm El Sheikh, and also from the damaging effects of such practices such as dynamite fishing, which previously devastated the coral reefs. In a way a by product of tourist demand for accommodation and fish, the Ras Muhammad National park now provides an excellent unspoilt area in which to enjoy the full range of water sports. In addition to scuba diving, snorkelling and swimming, the Ras Muhammad National park is popular with devotees of kite surfing, wind surfing and parasailing.

Keen golfers can enjoy the championship golf course in the Jolie Ville Golf Resort, just 5km away from the main hotel area of Sharm El Sheikh. In fact, the Golf fanatic can spend an entire holiday staying at the resort, but the course is also open to non-resident visitors. Back in Sharm El Sheikh you'll find the full range of facilities that you might expect of an established family holiday resort, with swimming pools and amusement parks offering activities for children not yet ready for swimming in the open sea. As with all Egypt holidays, it perhaps goes without saying that the weather is uniformly hot, and so plenty of protection from the sun is required at all times to avoid sun burn and heat stroke.
